MANY IN CONGRESS STAND UP FOR BP INSTEAD OF US CITIZENS ON THE GULF COAST
They are Eager to Represent Special Interests Over the Public Interest.

NORCROSS, Georgia – Doug Heckman, candidate for the House of Representatives in Georgia’s 7th Congressional District, spoke out against defenses of BP in the wake of the announcement that the multinational corporation will set up a $20 billion fund for compensating Gulf residents.

“BP absolutely should be pressed to set aside money to compensate victims of the spill. Thousands of people have lost their livelihoods along the Coast. They can’t wait for a court ruling and then many more years to be compensated for BP’s missteps and negligence.

This fund came out of a negotiation between BP and the White House. Americans have an interest in BP conserving cash for this cleanup.”

Heckman added: “This is what makes Americans question whether Congress represents them or the special interests funding their campaigns.”

The EPA is now considering whether BP would be barred from future federal contracts because of the environmental missteps it committed even before the spill in the Gulf of Mexico. BP has a poor safety record and has not implemented the improvements it has repeatedly promised in the past.

Heckman stated: “That is why I am in this race for Congress. I want to be a responsible public servant for the people of our District and our Nation. There is no place for partisan politics in this time of environmental crisis.”

Heckman recently returned from his second military deployment to Iraq where he earned his third combat Bronze Star. He was stationed in the Baghdad area with other Special Operations soldiers. He previously served a tour of duty in Afghanistan in Oct 2001.

Doug Heckman is a West Point graduate and will have two sons entering West Point this month. Heckman also has an MBA from Duke University and has lived in the 7th District for 20 years with his wife and three children.
